Obidos, which was one of the candidates to the seven wonders of Portugal in 2007, is an historic Portuguese town that carries us to ancient times. Surrounded by its walls, from where you will be able to enjoy the fantastic views, this medieval town, with its narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with colored flowers in every corners, is an historical site that you don’t want to miss.
Here you will find commercial shops with local handicraft articles, very typical and welcoming bars and good restaurants, where you can enjoy of wonderful Portuguese gastronomy. Be sure however to taste the great “Ginjinha de Óbidos”, served in small chocolate cups!
Installed since 1951 inside Óbidos Castle, you will find the Pousada de Óbidos, one of the most prestigious Pousadas de Portugal.
A little bit of History:
"Conquered from the Moors by the troops of the first Portuguese King, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148, Óbidos was donated in 1210 by D. Afonso II to his wife, Queen Urraca, and subsequently donated to Queen Santa Isabel by her husband, King D. Dinis, in 1281. Obidos was, until 1883, a land of queens, and that’s perhaps why it has kept its picturesque and romantic environment so well preserved over the centuries. "
