Daintree :
The Daintree region is a nature-lover’s paradise abounding with tropical birds, butterflies, reptiles and countless species of wildlife, not to mention 3000 plant species from 210 families, which are found in the Wet Tropics. This area is home to about a third of Australia's 315 mammal species - 13 of which are found nowhere else in the world.

In the last 20 years the Daintree has become well known for its success in crocodile spotting.

There are many river tours throughout the day, some offering a short crocodile– and wildlife-spotting experience while other interpretive cruises cater for special-interest groups such as birdwatchers, naturalists and photographers, and are operated by world-renowned experts in their particular fields. Float down the river at dawn or dusk and marvel at our hundreds of species of tropical birds … or simply enjoy a tranquil sunset cruise with a glass of good wine!

There is a golf course, and there are fishing-trips, beach-walks, guided rainforest walks, horse-rides, an open-air theatre and a native zoo.

Daintree is internationally recognised as one of Australia's premier bird watching locations with many overseas and local bird enthusiasts coming to our area for this specific purpose.

It has been documented that over 430 species of birds have been recorded in the area encompassing the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef region of Australia. This is more than half the bird species for the entire continent. Many of these birds are easily seen in the Daintree area throughout the year. At particular times of the year, "birders" from all over the world will travel to our region just to catch sight of some of the more unique species that happen to be either passing through or setting up temporary residence for breeding purposes. The Daintree area has a variety of habitats with rainforest, wetlands, mangroves, open fields and the Daintree River. Daintree is an ideal location as a base for a birding holiday in Far North Queensland or can be an important addition to a birding itinerary, which may include Cairns, Julatten, Mareeba and the Atherton Tablelands.

When one visits the Daintree, most will think of the Estuarine Crocodile, the largest reptile in Australia. But in looking further people will be amazed at the diversity of Reptiles found in and around the Daintree rainforest and mangrove habitats. There is a great fascination for these animals, particularly with the tourists who visit us from all over the world. Crocodile spotting in this region has only become popular since about the mid 70's and visitors are impressed with the opportunity to see the crocodiles from nearby.
