The Casa Grande is the largest of a number of houses, all of differing sizes and character, that make up the finca, Los Cortijos. Central to all is an oasis-like garden where one can relax under the shade of the large palm trees. A feature of Los Cortijos is that it offers the opportunity to meet with other holiday-makers, if so wished or you can keep to yourselves. The finca lies off a small road running down to the sea and the unspoilt golden beaches of Mangueta (nude and topless sunbathing popular). Going North this beach runs into El Palmar, both a surfers and family beach, then Conil. To the South you have a fine beach with a bar/ restaurant that often offers live music, the Cape Trafalgar with it´s light-house, the beautiful Caños de Meca and the port of Barbate lies after the stretches of protected Umbrella Pine forest.
Los Cortijos is in Zahora, a small,unspoilt, Spanish community,lying between the coastal communities of Los Caños de Meca and El Palmar. Zahora has “desert island” beaches on one side and possibly Europe´s largest sand dune to the other which is forested with umbrella pines and is now a protected Nature reserve.
This whole area is a nature lovers paradise. You may see: dolphins, giant turtles (washed up), mongeese, owls, nightjars, bee-eaters, snakes, cameleons, badgers, vultures, storks, stick-insects etc,etc. At Los Cortijos we are approx.10mins.walk to 2 very different but equally stunning beaches and aprox. a 10 min. beautiful drive from 3 very differing towns where one can sightsee,have some drinks and tapas with the locals and do the weekly shopping all in one. These towns have fresh- produce markets in the mornings:- There is the inland town of Vejer de la Frontera, a beautiful town with labyrinthian streets of white houses with beautiful patios of flowers and a typical Arab/Moorish atmosphere.This is perched high on a hill and commands impressive views both inland and out to Morocco. The other towns are Conil going north up the coast and Barbate to the south.
Further afield: ½ hr Cadiz, 40mins Jerez, 1.1/2hr Gibraltar, Seville 2.hr, Malaga 2.1/2hr. Tangier 3/4hr from Tarifa/ Algeciras
