Location:
Amaliapolis is a picturesque seaside village situated on a large bay in the Pagasitic Gulf on the east coast of Greece, 53km south of the lively university city of Volos from where Jason and the Argonauts set sail. It is roughly midway between Athens and Thessaloniki and so well situated for exploring mainland Greece, including the monateries of Meteora, classical Delphi and other archaeological sites in Magnesia and beyond.
How to get there:
There are charter flights to Nea Anchialos Volos Airport (23km) April-October. Otherwise you can fly to Athens or Thessaloniki and take the E75 motorway as far as the Sourpi exit. From there the village is around 15km distance. You can also reach the village by using the long distance buses from Athens or Thessaloniki to nearby Almyros.
Village Features:
In the village centre you will find a choice of cafes/bars and tavernas, with excellent fish, three of which stay open all year, all within walking distance of the villa. The village also has two bakeries and two general stores. The beach is also within walking distance of the apartments and is sandy and gently sloping - making it very suitable for young children. There is also a children’s playground, 5-a-side football pitch and volleyball court next to the beach. In high season there are 2 lively beach bars which stay open til late. In summer Amaliapolis is popular with holidaying Greek families. You can experience the 'real' Greece here largely untouched by mass market tourism. The village is surrounded by olive groves and framed by hills. Further inland lie the plains of Thessaly where cotton is grown. Across the Gulf lies the Pelion Peninsula with skiing in winter and beautiful beaches, mountain villages and spectacular scenery.
Special events:
Greek Easter 15th April 2012 - celebrated in the traditional way with church services in beautifully decorated Church and traditional spit-roasted lamb on Easter Sunday
Village saint's day festival (Sotiris) August 6th - Church service and parade through the village followed by celebratory meal sometimes with music and dancing
