Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the council of Machico. Its name comes from a cross (cruz) that the early explorers erected in the bay that was once used as a port (porto). But there are many hidden attractions here that may only be discovered if you take a closer look. One of them is the old sugar cane factory which is still operating in the same way, as it did when sugar production started in 1927. Also not to be missed is the place known as Penha D’Águia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Making your way to the top might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the sounds of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there, you’ll be sure it was definitely worth it. The views from Penha d’Águia are absolutely amazing! Porto the Cruz is on the North coast of Madeira and from there you can quickly get to the Airport (12 minutes by car), to the nearest golf course in Santo da Serra (15 minutes by car).
