Laterina

The territory where Laterina castle is to day, stands out was inhabited ever since very ancient times, as testified by the Etrurian dwellings and the probable Roman settlements of the Augustan age.
The strategical location of Laterina made the castle very important and for this reason Florence and Arezzo fought for its possession.

In 1272,Arezzo took control of Laterina to block off the expansion in Valdarno of the Florentines (GUELFI).The Noble Family of Ubertini ( from Arezzo) ruled over the castle, although not for long since few years after their arrival on the 15 September of 1288, after 8 days of hard siege by the Florentines troops ( Ghibellini) they were defeated and they were compelled to surrender.

The Captain of the Castle Lupo Farinata degli Uberti instead of staying with its subjects , ran away,( the legend say that since his name was Wolf = Lupo, he declared that was not in the wolves way of life to be captured and held prisoners)
This fact is reported by Dante in a verse of the Divina Commedia (Inferno)

Since then for over one century, the castle witnessed bloodshed between the Republic of Florence and the Town of Arezzo.
After a series of ups and downs,, ,on the 5th November 1384, in Laterina was signed the treaty that sanctioned the final defeat of Arezzo and the delivery of the territories of the old village to the Republic of Florence.
The historical centre is in perfect conditions and lies on a hill that dominates the Arno plain. The circle of walls encloses the village that overlooks the rugged declivity of the hill. The ancient centre is made up of three parallel streets: the central one, the "Via di Mezzo" ends to the east with the Fortress and to the west with the tower Torre Guinigi. in the middle of the village there is the square with the church of S. Ippolito and S.Cassiano which took this name from the old monastery that is still on a small hill in front of Laterina and that is now on the process of being restored.. Out of Laterina, along the Via Vecchia Aretina, Villa Monsoglio is one of the most magnificent villas around Arezzo. It has an extensive Italian garden and interiors decorated with frescoes. Near Laterina there was the bridge Ponte Romito, so called because in the near hospital (founded in 1109 and now known as Villa Monsoglio) had settled one or more "repentants", usually Franciscan tertiaries, commonly called by the population "hermits". The bridge, whose ancient structures remain, was important for the communications between Arezzo and Valdarno. Now Laterina is a well preserved Medieval hamlet, definitely worth a visit.
