Milazzo

MILAZZO is deeply rooted into prehistoric times and was slowly built up along a sinuous and variegated dorsal that stretches out into the Tyrrhenian Sea for 7 km after the earth movements that formed the bold outline of its promontory on the directrix of the Aeolian Islands. Thanks to the splendid climate, the superb, restful panorama of the Archipelago, standing out on the horizon in a myriad of light and colour, can nearly always be seen from here. The exact origin of the city dates back to 716 b.c. when it was founded by Greek colonies from Messana. After centuries of Arab, Norman and Swabian dominion, it also came under the rule of the Aragonese, whose influence can still be seen in the architecture of the castle towers, and finally under the Bourbons. The battle of 20th July 1860 was the last act in its troubled history. The historic part of the city, dominated by the majestic castle which seems to vigilate and protect it from above, is the perfect natural outpost to get to the Aeolian Islands by means of the frequent hydrofoil, boat and ferry services, allowing even the most hurried tourist to visit the major attractions of the Archipelago within a day. The city has its own typical interest spots, among which are the Garibaldi Promenade, the Town Square and Cappuccini’s Climb, Polyphemus’s Cave and the road that leads to the Cape, where the whole isthmus can be seen with its churches, the Municiple Building and the Port and pier. The most beautiful Archipelago in the world can be reached from here in 45 easy minutes. Beautiful Hotels, besides friendly local restaurants offer all the making of a relaxing holiday.
