Obanya

The Mecsek region is becoming quiet a popular holiday destination of Hungary. Because every year more and more tourists are discovering all the hidden beauty spots Hungary has to offer.
And a definite advantage is that there’s enough space for many.
Óbánya is situated in the south of Hungary in the province Baranya and loved by walkers.
Twentysix kilometer southwest of Óbánya you will find Pécs, the capital of Baranya.

From this city the Mecsek-region starts up north. Nature here is still very much untouched and that remains this way because ' the Mecsek ' has for many years been declared as a protected nature area. The area stands under protection of the ‘Duna-Drava National Park’. The village of Óbánya lies on the northeast side of this area, and is surrounded by splendid woods. Parallel to the small road, there runs a refreshing clear stream, to the left of Óbánya. The inhabitants also take much pride and enjoy in conserving the romantic values of their very own quaint and tranquil village.

The village (156 souls) lies in a valley that runs from Mecseknádasd to Kisújbánya. Most of the inhabitants are originated from Germany. They came here in the 18 century and called their village after their home village in Germany: Atlglashütte. Until today this name exists and the German language is still heard among older people.
The village became very famous by the huge pottery industry. In every house somebody, or whole families where engaged in making pots.

The village has a particular environment. The houses are standing on both sides of the only street in the village, the Main Street. Most of the houses are old, built with clay each house has a courtyard. Then frequently found at the end of the courtyard is a cellar built into the hillside, which, creates the superb atmosphere to make an excellent wine.

In the village, there is a museum with an exhibition about the history and the traditions of the village. You can see a collection of old antique objects, clothing, photographs and documents. And of course there is also a large collection of pottery.

In the village is a restaurant, there are excursion programs. Nearby there is a grocery shop, a souvenir shop, the bus stop, the public mailbox and the local pub.
