Revel

The famous market town of Revel is nearly unique in France as a perfect example of a bastide town. Not as you might think a town on a hill, and not fortified - but actually a 'new town' - constructed in the south-west of France from around 1229.

The heart of the Revel is the market square, bordered by medieval houses with galleries under the first floors. In the centre of the square is a large tiled roof supported by a forest of ancient oak pillars and beams. Under this roof Revel still hosts a fabulous and thriving Saturday morning market. It attracts locals, along with French & foreign tourists. Expect to find delicacies such as fois gras, specialty cheeses and hams as well as produce local small holdings. Look out for the sellers at the centre, those under cover are the oldest family businesses - out of the wind and the rain and the sun... The lake of St Ferréol is just 5 min from here, and the famous old village St Félix Lauragais only 10 min.
