Sospel

SOSPEL is a small typical medieval town with a strong Italian flavour
located inbetween sea and mountains. The river Bevera flows in
the middle of the town under an ancient tollbridge, the typical façades`along the river are pretttely painted in « trompe l’œil ». The baroque cathedral which has integrated a roman bell tower is one of the most impressive of the Côte d’Azur and opens on an operatic cobbed plazza
circled by florentine type buildings. One of them has welcomed a pope
in historical times .
Once part of the Duché de Savoie, it has also belonged to the Counts of Provence and has been an important spot for trading as part of the Salt Road when salt was brought from Provençal seaside to TURINO in Italy by caravans of mules and donkeys.
Surrounded by mountains at the door of the Mercantour National Park it is
part of the MENTON hinterland.
It offers thus a blend of Mediterranean and Alpine athmosphere and vegetation. Only 18 kms from the seaside at MENTON by a dramatic drive along pretty « gorges » it enables numerous explorations of the French and Italian RIVIERA at less than an hour drive
( MONACO- CAP FERRAT- NICE- SAN REMO). And also offers endless hikes in beautifful preserved natural landscapes in the mountains around, in the Mercantour National Park, in the Vallée des Merveilles and discovering of the lovely villages of the Vallée de la Roya such as SAORGE.
