Attica

Athens, the capital of Greece, is home to some of the most important ancient and archaeological sites in the world. The most famous of course, is the Parthenon, which sits majestically at the top of the Acropolis in Athens.

However, if Athena, the Goddess of wisdom, hadn't won her contest with Poseidon, God of the Sea, for the prize of the city of Athens-Greece, the Parthenon would have been a temple for Poseidon instead.

However, Athena did win the contest and, as well as her name, bestowed her sacred olive tree upon the city.

The Golden Age of Athens saw it as the centre of world, full of the greatest writers, most skilled sculptors and distinguished philosophers.

Democracy was born. People of the city flocked to the theatre so see that latest tragedy by Socrates, and the artistic skills of the Athenians was something that was shared by all.

What is so impressive about this Golden Age in time is that even though now the importance of Athens has greatly diminished, the remains of the great city are still there for all to visit and admire. Temples and ruins remain, which were of great importance in their day.

Today they may appear as no more than another collection of ruins that scatter the city, but they still attract huge numbers of visitors, simply because of their importance and physical beauty.

Examples such as the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Zeus are just a few of the sites that Athens has to offer. Around the city, there are many places that have stood the test of time extremely well.

The Parthenon, visible from all over Athens-Greece, stands as proudly as ever, as though keeping a watchful eye on the goings-on below.

The beautiful Plaka district, around the base of the Acropolis is filled with old houses and shops, as well as a fine selection of coffee shops and tavernas where you can sit back and enjoy a drink or meal.

You can also have a look around the Monastiraki street market, where you are sure to find interesting and unique gifts for friends or loved ones.

Athens, like so many areas in Greece, is a place that really needs to be explored. With so much to see and do, you will never run out of things to keep you busy.

And once you are satisfied that you have seen most of Athens-Greece, you can then head straight down to the port of Piraeus and jump on a ferry boat to take you to one of the many beautiful Greek Islands.
