Es Castell

Es Castell is a popular fishing village just 2Km from Mahon (capital of Menorca) and is the easternmost town in Spain!

It is a town steeped in history and military connections, evidence of which can still be seen today. Originally named Georgetown by the English who built it in square-block military style, it was later renamed Villacarlos when the island returned to Spanish rule.

It is now known, as it always has been to the Menorquins, as Es Castell - The Castle, because of its proximity to the previously demolished Fort of San Felip.

A busy and thriving town, Es Castell hasplenty to offer its residents and visitors alike, in the way of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. Many of the restaurants and bars are in converted caves around the two coves, Cala Corb, and more especially Calas Fons, offering meals to suite all tastes and excellent value.

There are market days twice a week in the central square, and the town has its own annual fiesta, the Fiesta de San Jaume, at the end of July. This fiesta is not to be missed especially the incredible firework display over the harbour.

Close to Es Castell is a prehistoric village of Trepuco where there can be found a massive Talyot and Taula and remains of an excavated village dating back to the first or second millenium BC, and is well worth a visit
