Hobart

Hobart is just a 15 minute drive away from Derwent Retreat and one and a half to one to one and three quarter hours away from Wedgeside and is a city surrounded by water with mountains as a backdrop, old world waterfront and one of the best if not the best Saturday market in the world. It is the gateway to the south west wilderness of Tasmania and centre for many local attractions. Hobart is big enough for there to be sophisticated restaurants and entertainment yet small enough to enjoy.

Hobart was founded in 1803 as a penal colony, and because the Derwent River is one of Australia's finest deepwater ports became the centre of the Southern Ocean whaling and seal trade. Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, Australia's second oldest and eleventh largest city, with a metropolitan population of approximately 202,000.

The city is on the magnificent Derwent River at the mouth of the beautiful Derwent valley and is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania as well as the Australian gateway to the Antarctic and serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations.

For those who like dining, Hobart’s inner suburbs of North Hobart and Salamanca place are where the best restaurants are to be found.
