North-West

Whether you dress up and dine with the platinum elite or stick to the simple splendour of a fire cooked potjiekos venison stew, the food terroir of the North West offers epicurean opportunities not to be missed.

From the lush Magaliesburg mountain beauty of Hartbeestport to the far-as-the-eye-can-see agricultural plenty of Vryberg and on into the game-laden bushveld of the Marico, the food terroir of the North West province is a delicious mélange of landscapes, cultures and cuisines.

Hot summers are always on the menu and with them come lingering lunches and picnics in the shade of the withaak trees. Cold winter nights see mampoer (local liqueur) fueled, tall tale telling and plentiful portions venison potjiekos stews.

Cultural diversity infuses the North West food terroir. Eat a bratwurst in Kroondal dished up by a community whose German ancestors arrived in 1857. Sample Batswana morogo diretlo iserobe (tripe with spinach) or diloo beans. Munch on an Afrikaans style fire baked roosterkoek bread.

Rest and relaxation under the thorn trees is but one aspect of the food terroir of the North West province. In recent years platinum has overtaken gold as South Africa's largest precious metal export and the vast majority of such mines are to be found in North West. The consequent wealth of the mining houses and the Bafokeng tribe (holders of many of the mineral rights) can be seen in the gourmet glamour of the restaurants that serve the platinum elite. Truffle and porcini-packed opulence is the order of the day at Sun City resort's Villa Del Palazo and understated elegance marks the mood at Silver Orange Bistro outside Hartbeesport but the plenty of platinum seasons the plates at both establishments.

The Batswana people have a saying: “moeng goroga re je ka wean” which translates as ”˜when guests arrive we eat.' Wherever you pick up a fork in this most hospitable of provinces there will be a meal to suit your mood, palate and wallet.
